Politics

by William Butler Yeats

In our time the destiny of man presents its meanings in political terms.

–THOMAS MANN

How can I, that girl standing there,
My attention fix
On Roman or on Russian
Or on Spanish politics,
Yet here’s a travelled man that knows
What he talks about,
And there’s a politician
That has both read and thought,
And maybe what they say is true
Of war and war’s alarms,
But O that I were young again
And held her in my arms.

While not one of Yeats’ more complex poems, perhaps this might be considered a bittersweet obiter dictum, reminding us that turbulent times will always be navigated and old men will always dream.

Thanks to Irv O. Neil, who made me aware of this poem. Irv is someone very special. Check out his blog, find him on Twitter and buy his books.

Time for the old men to step aside and bring back the values that are cherished

  2. Puppet Prince Says:

We learn to be so politically realistic we forget the goals of politics are not be worldly and numb, but to navigate the paths of hope in search of freedom and happiness.

Thanks for the sweet words, Angela, and for sharing this favorite poem. It certainly expresses the way my mind often works; I wish I could have written it! Though I don’t write about politics online, I am hyper-aware of it and talk about it incessantly. But, like the speaker in the poem, my head is easily turned away from the weightiest of matters…as are those of my friends. We’ll be in the middle of some coffee shop disquisition about the latest mess and all our fiery rhetoric will suddenly come to a standstill when we acknowledge, either with words or glances between our horny aged selves, the progress a comely customer makes as she strides into our view on her way to a table…

Thanks to you and your friend, Irv O. Neil. Angela. You have good friends! Quite powerful and something we all need to remember.

Too bad the memories of war ravaged veterans can’t be transferred to those who would send the young off to the war du jour. In the meantime, how about a sustained erotic ceasefire?
